Megan grew up in Charlotte, North Carolina. At an early age, she participated in musical theater, choral programs, and competitions throughout her time in middle school and high school. These were the years Megan discovered her true passion and as natural as a songbird she found the gift of song. She had found her voice!
After high school, it came time to decide which university to attend. Megan knew her heart was rooted in music, but she was not certain if it was something worth pursuing. As fate would have it, Megan, met a couple in Florida who directed her life’s path by suggesting that she move to New Orleans and study jazz voice right away after hearing her sing. She immediately applied being full of inspiration to follow her dreams. Megan was not only accepted, but was accepted on a full scholarship to study Jazz Voice at the University of New Orleans.
Megan has studied classical voice with the wonderful teacher and vocalist, Megan Dearie. Megan can not recommend enough how important correct technique is so that the student can get the most out of their instrument which in this case is the student's body. The technique Megan teaches also protects the student from causing any harm to one's own vocal cords. Megan has also studied Jazz Voice with New Orleans legend Leah Chase. In 2011, Megan earned the Women in Jazz Scholarship, which she received at the Jazz Education Network Conference. She has spent her college years listening to the sounds of New Orleans and working with a diverse and immensely talented network of musicians; in this way, she is focused on her own growth as a musician.
We believe at New Orleans Music Lessons, that sometimes the best education is by doing. Megan has performed with such amazing musicians as Jo Lawry, Sachel Vasandani, Leah Chase, and JD Walters. Through working with these wonderful musicians and instructors, she has also developed a love for teaching music.
Megan is honored to have had the education she has had. It was an opportunity that turned into an amazing experience taught by caring professors, as stated by Megan. Megan now teaches with the same inspiration and knowledge that has been passed down to her. She now wants to pass the gift of music down to you or your loved one that thirsts for knowledge and the power to be the best singer and performer they can be. By teaching the techniques Megan has learned, added with her own personal signature and style, Megan's voice lessons help the aspiring musician progress so that they can become one sing-ular sensation! ;) Megan is a very patient and warm person. If you ever have a chance to hear her sing you will be inspired. If you have the opportunity to take voice lessons from her you will have changed your life for the positive. We are proud to have Megan as our voice coach here at New Orleans Music Lessons.
