All of our faculty have graduated with a B.F.A., Masters, or are on their way to finishing their music degree. We take pride at being professional, patient, and fun during your music lessons. We love what we do. Teaching and playing music is our life and livelihood and it is our goal to share our passion with you. New Orleans Music Lessons inspires our students and coaches them to be the best players they can be by meeting them at their level and making it a fun, learning experience while meeting the students goals and beyond.
Sage “Rouge” Newell began as a clarinetist and vocalist in Oregon at the age of 11, and instantly fell in love with jazz. Soon after, she began playing saxophones and bass clarinet as well. With alto saxophone as her primary instrument, she competed at several national and international big band competitions as the lead saxophonist in her high school jazz ensemble, receiving such honors as “Best Saxophone Section” three years running, “Outstanding Soloist Award,” first place in the San Francisco Ensemble competition, and second place in the renowned Reno Jazz Competition. She played lead reed in numerous broadway-scored musicals including West Side Story, Chicago, Annie, and The Wizard of Oz. From there, she went on to become the youngest member ever in the band Scrambled Ape - a local funk group comprised of music teachers - and was featured with a professional big band called Swing Shift after winning a soloist competition.
Deciding to pursue a career in music, Sage moved to Louisiana in 2011 and received her B.A. in Jazz Studies at the University of New Orleans. During her time in the Big Easy, she began playing, singing, and touring with several accomplished bands, including Johnny Sketch and the Dirty Notes, The Scorseses, and the prestigious Loyola Jazz Ensemble, among others. Sage has played at many festivals across the country, such as Gulfport Music Fest, New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, Honk! Fest West, Houston Beer Fest, and the Oregon Country Fair. She is also known to play many venues around the city - Tipitina’s, One-Eyed Jack’s, The Maple Leaf and The Blue Nile to name a few.
Even during her time at the University, Sage taught music classes, appeared in music clinics and seminars, and began working as a saxophone instructor as well as a vocal coach. She has studied and played with saxophone gurus Ed Petersen, Brent Rose, Tony Dagradi and Jason Mingledorff, as well as Cherry Poppin’ Daddies’ saxophonist Joe Manis.
Sage is thrilled to be a part of New Orleans Music Lessons, and can’t wait to help students become the musicians they want to be!
