Mike Robbins is our electric and upright bass instructor. Sign up for bass lessons with him, but first we'd like you to get to know him a little better.
Who are your favorite musical artists of all time?
Everyone who I have ever played with, J.S. Bach, Lester Young, Jimmy Blanton, Paul Chambers, Phil Flanigan, Milt Hinton, The Slip, Reed Mathis...
What CD or album they are listening to now?
"Rules Aren't Real" by Nasimiyu Murumba, which will be released in late June, and the Barr Brothers self titled debut album.
What books and gear do you use and recommend to your students?
Try to get the best equipment that you can afford. I have been really liking my flatwounds (I use LaBella flats) on my electric lately...Books are great to work through with a teacher, but the goal is to be able to make up your own exercises, and practices for yourself. Here's a list of my favorite books that our students buy through our Amazon search box from New Orleans Music Lessons:
"The Hero With a Thousand Face" by Joseph Campbell, "The Call For the Master" by Karlfried Graf Durckehim, "Musicophilia" by Oliver Sacks...
What have you been working on lately in your practice routine?
Lately I have been really into minor scales, and diminished patterns, and working them in over dominant chords
What are your interests besides music?
I love anything outdoors and I love reading.
When I have a student get excited about our lessons it really makes me happy inside to know that I can bring other people joy, especially, through music! I've had many tips given to me from my students over the years as a thank you to me for all they have learned from our lessons. I've received gifts that have ranged from money to books and more and I am so grateful for all. Just recently, I was given a guitar as a thank you from one of my jazz guitar students, Matthias. How cool is that?! (it's the cream guitar on the right).
Check out Matthias' band, Indyus. His music will definitely get you going!
Looking to practice your scales, arps, and/or sight reading? Practice guitar with our teacher, David, every morning Monday through Friday at 10AM. If you'd like to meet earlier that can be arranged, too. This is not a lesson, but a practice session. $10 if you pay-as-you-go or $40 if you meet everyday of the week. All stringed instrumentalists are welcome!
Are you a business that would like your ad to be seen by thousands daily? Contact David for details. We can also design ads for you or your business.
We know how it can be to be a parent or spouse waiting for your child or loved one to take a lesson.
