FEATURED NEW CLASS OFFERING: EAR TRAINING

Student Testimonial: Amber L. says, "David’s ear training course is an invaluable accompaniment to my lessons. This is a course you really want to  take if you want to start thinking like a musician. It teaches you how to dissect melodies and rhythms with just your ears. The knowledge that you get out of this course can be applied to all melodic instruments, and provides a launching pad for being able to pick up and play with other musicians or learning songs by ear. I love the ear training course and I definitely recommend it."

With this course you will be able to hear and transcribe melodies, chord changes, and rhythms without your instrument...but with your EARS!  You will receive a CD and the lesson material as part of the course for no extra charge! When you take this course you should have an ear training cd or audio files you can access, intro page to ear training, an intervals page with popular songs, and some blank paper to write down your answers during the class.  We will be discussing basic rudiments of music, but the main focus of the course will be training your ear to hear and identify intervals, chords, melodies, and progressions.  There are 6 Courses and each course is comprised of 6 classes. So, if you stick with it every week your ear will have drastically changed for the better within 36 weeks as each course advances.  You'll see how much fun it can be after one lesson.

All Classes Offered

Private Lessons:

Private lessons are the most popular and are recommended for everyone whether you are an advancing musician or a complete beginner.  New Orleans Music Lessons only has the best educators and coaches.  Each teacher has graduated with a degree in their field of expertise and is a professional entertainer in their respective discipline.

Private lessons have the options of 1-hour lessons (most popular) at a time, thirty minute lessons, or one 3-hour lesson for those who have a limited amount of time.

3 - Hour Lesson Session:

This is a great way to learn as much as you can in one session from your teacher.  The 3-hour lesson session is perfect if you are a.) someone who's schedule or job takes you out of town often (i.e. offshore rigging, medical surgeon, etc.) and b.) someone who likes to learn a lot in a very intense and short amount of time - AKA an extremist type of personality.

Group Lessons:

Group lessons are a great way for you and your friends or family to learn an instrument, take acting lessons, or any other class we have to offer, together!  All levels are welcome and accommodated.  For example, a beginner can learn how to play chords while a more advanced player can solo.  This is also an option for Birthday Parties and other festive events.  See all other group offerings in our catalogue.

Online Lessons (AKA WebCam Lessons)

Shopping online, watching movies online, listening to music online, taking guitar lessons online, checking mail online, paying bills and getting paid online are all part of the world’s daily routine.  New Orleans Music Lessons implements cutting edge teaching methods into traditional styles that work.  We want to teach lessons to everyone all over the world that want to learn from the best and we have been able to do so via webcam lessons.  Lessons via webcam have the advantages of the teacher/student not having to leave the house to have high quality lessons.  Lesson material is emailed to the student before or after the lesson so the student can practice and never worry about keeping pesky papers organized in their folder.  All material is right there in their hard drive.  This is also a great way to not miss a lesson when a student or teacher goes out of town for work or vacation.

WebCam lessons are fun and convenient making it very affordable and easy for scheduling.  Give it a try.  It’s as easy as buying guitar picks on Amazon, but a lot more fun.

Apple's Facetime Lessons (Quickie Lessons):

Recommended for anyone that owns an iPhone 4, iPad, or Mac with the Facetime app installed.  New Orleans Music Lessons offers you the ability to ask a quick question or have a quick lesson through your iPhone or Mac with the Facetime application.  No lesson material (papers, cds, etc.) come with Facetime Quickie Lessons.  It's perfect for the regular student that has a quick question when practicing between lessons.  Quickie lessons.  Have a question? 5 bucks. 15 minutes.  Quickie Lessons.

Super Lessons:

Super lessons are an intense set of lessons offered for those who want to learn a lot in a very little amount of time or who only have a short amount of time to take lessons due to work and other various reasons.  This is a week’s set of lessons that can be broken up into a one-hour lesson every day of the week, 5 days a week, or into 4 days a week where there will be a one-hour lesson each day except for one day where there will be two hour lesson. Lessons are created at your skill level of playing by you and your teacher.

There are two categories of Super Lessons:

1.)          Concepts – This category of Super Lessons focuses on a concept or set of concepts.  For example, soloing concepts, scales and modes, chordal concepts, fingerpicking, transcribing, etc.  What do you want to learn?

2.)          Songs – The songs category of Super Lessons focuses on learning specific songs at your level.  We will work on 3 songs of your choice (or I’d be happy to pick songs for you) and 1 solo excerpt from one of the songs.  You will be able to learn how to play using the specific techniques.  After taking this course you will have the tools to play the songs at the speed and technical level of the songs learned.

Super Deluxe Lessons:

Super Deluxe Lessons are a combination of Super Concepts Lessons and Super Songs Lessons that will last a span of two weeks.  Now, you can learn the basic concepts the first week so you’ll have an advantage when learning to play the songs for the next week of Super Lessons.

Beginners Beatles Lessons:

The Beatles are one of the most popular bands of all time, and are liked by all generations.  A weekly course will be offered for guitar and ukulele.  This is a 4-week group class that will teach Beatles songs for all levels and ages 12 and up.  Each lesson will meet once a week for a one-hour lesson each.  Beginners can strum chords while more advanced players can play the solos and chords.

Beginners Beatles course for younger ages is also offered.

Did you know John, Paul, and George were all prolific ukulele players?  They all could play jazz standards, as well as strum pop tunes of their time.

Guitar Logic and Fretboard Mapping:

The guitar is an instrument that is laid out in a very logical way (that is, once you understand the logic behind it).  Patterns and shapes are some of the main reasons that set the guitar and other fretted instruments apart from non-string instruments.  For example, did you know that the E note on the 2nd fret, 4th string of the guitar sounds exactly like the E note on the 7th fret, 5th string in pitch?  It does and so does the 12th fret, 6th string!  We will learn the layout of the guitar fretboard in a logical way while learning foundations of chord, scale, and pattern theory.  Learning the guitar fretboard logically will make it much easier for you to play, build and identify chords, shapes, patterns, melodies, and scales.  You will be able to navigate much easier over the entire guitar neck and have a more logical way of hearing songs, too!

Ear Training:

Something I did everyday, while receiving my B.F.A. in Jazz Studies at UNO, was ear training!  With this course you will be able to hear and transcribe melodies, chord changes, and rhythms without your instrument...but with your EARS! We will be discussing basic rudiments of music, but the main focus of the course will training your ear to hear and identify intervals, chords, melodies, and progressions.  There are 6 Courses and each course is comprised of 6 classes.  So, if you stick with it every week your ear will have drastically changed for the better within 36 weeks as each course advances.  You'll see how much fun it can be after one lesson.  Each lesson is one hour.

Here’s an excerpt of the course’s outline that you will be learning:

CLASS 1 - MELODIC INTERVALS

1. Seconds AND SIMPLE DICTATION (QUARTER NOTES ONLY)

2. Thirds

3. Perfect 4ths/5ths/Unison

4. 6ths

5. 7ths/Octave

6. TEST/Introduction to HARMONIC INTERVALS

CLASS 2 - HARMONIC INTERVALS AND SIMPLE DICTATION

CLASS 3 - TRIADS

Anyone can learn to hear and play by ear.  The Ear Training course teaches you how to play, read, and write by ear.  Beethoven still composed after he went deaf.  The same fundamentals that Beethoven knew and could hear in his head are the same fundamentals that we will be learning in New Orleans Music Lessons Ear Training course.

Music Theory Class:

Learn the fundamentals from an academic and aural standpoint.  This course is perfect for the advancing musician to better their understanding of music theory, reading, writing, harmonies, rhythms, and arranging.  We especially recommend this course to the new music student who is going to be a freshman in the college music program and/or is a serious musician that wants to know how to piece everything together musically.  Every wonder how music works?  Then this is the class for you!  Group classes meet once a week.  A private class can also be scheduled to as many times a week as student needs or prefers.

Each topic will be related to music popular today through aural examples.  In other words, you will get to hear what you are learning!  Here are only a few examples of the topics that you will learn in the course:

&          Music Notation (how to read and write music)

&          Accidentals, Key Signatures, Time Signatures

&          Intervals, Triads, Chords

&          Meter and Rhythm

&          Chordal Voicings and Different Ranges of Instruments

&          Roman Numeral Analysis (R.N.A.) and 4-Part Harmony

        Do you know your keys?

Major and minor?                                                          How’s your rhythm?

How’s your R.N.A. and Figured Bass?

Can you play over

the changes?

If you don’t understand the material

shown on this page then

the Music Theory Course is for YOU.

Beginner Violin Lessons (Group):

This class, offered by Ms. Laurence, will cover how to properly hold the violin and bow, bowing, playing single notes and simple melodies, tone, positioning, and much more.  This class is highly recommended, as you will learn from one of the best violin teachers in town, Ms. Laurence.  “After having many violinists and violin teachers show me how to play the violin, I gave up on the violin almost altogether.  After having a violin donated to me I asked Ms. Laurence to show me how to bow so that it would not sound like a cat screeching when I bowed.  She showed me in five minutes how to not only get a pleasant sound from the violin, but also how to play the first few lines to Frere Jacques AKA Are You Sleeping, Brother John?” – David P.; Founder & Music Teacher of NOML, Violin Student.  These group lessons meet weekly.  Lessons one-on-one with teacher are considered Private Lessons.

Student gives guitar teacher, David Putnam, an electric guitar!

When I have a student get excited about our lessons it really makes me happy inside to know that I can bring other people joy, especially, through music! I've had many tips given to me from my students over the years as a thank you to me for all they have learned from our lessons. I've received gifts that have ranged from money to books and more and I am so grateful for all. Just recently, I was given a guitar as a thank you from one of my jazz guitar students, Matthias. How cool is that?! (it's the cream guitar on the right).

Check out Matthias' band, Indyus. His music will definitely get you going!
